Two castles, two climbs, one day

We started off bright and early with a long trek up the hill to Neuschwanstein Castle.  From the reaction of the group inside the castle (where pictures are not allowed), it was worth it.  My daughter said "Of all the houses we've seen, I think I'd most like to live in this one".  Good luck with that, Magdalena.  After Neuschwanstein, we headed for Salzburg and went straight up the hill, past the funicular that is currently undergoing repairs, to walk all the way up this unconquerable fortress overlooking the city.  The view from the top is probably the best thing about the pre-booked tour of the castle you have to do to get in.  It was a tiring day, so I bought everyone a pretzel.  We stayed in luxury (comparatively) at the Gasthof Mostwastl after a great dinner in their dining hall.

Britney frames her shot of Neuschwanstein.

Almost there!  The walk was long and arduous for many.

Viewing the castle from down in the valley.

Mariensbrucke was closed unfortunately, but some of us walked a little further down the trail for this view of "mad" King Ludwig II's dream house.

Running becomes necessary at times to make your appointment.

 Hiking up from the viewpoint.

Framing a couple shots overlooking the Valley and one of Ludwig's other castles.

Parents with their kids.  I'm in this one!

Big Daddy Johnson and his many children.

A couple of pictures of all of us, even me!  Thankfully, the guy gave me back the camera.

The ticket machine is apparently giving Victoria some attitude.  Or she's about to cry after trying her ticket for the 10th time.

In front of the Salzburg Dom (cathedral).  The three dates correspond to three major building phases - the last one - 1959 - was when the cathedral reopened after suffering extensive damage in WW 2 caused by a stray American bomb that dropped right through the central dome.

A living church, with many parishioners.

In the torture chamber of the Salzburg fortress.

 Looking out over Salzburg.

Talking to strangers pays off - some great photo ops with these young Austrian men in their traditional garb.

Monica swears there is no one in there.

Entering the familiar (to Sound of Music fans) Mirabell Gardens.

Some sort of advanced interpretive dance to the tune of Doh, a deer.
